Module 5: Data Points and Geocoding

Web Map Link

This web map displays the Manatee County (Florida) schools including elementary through university level. It is projected as NAD 1983 (2011) HARN State Plane Florida West FIPS 0902 Feet.

This week, I developed skills in adding new data and geocoding. Up until this point the data we uploaded and manipulated was provided to us, or it was data we created. Within this module, I downloaded the data from the publicly available Florida Department of Education. I then cleaned up this data within the Excel platform, which I had some skills in before completing this lab. Then I downloaded the US county data and Manatee County streets from the US Census Bureau Geography Program website. It is amazing how much information there is on this website and even better that it is free to use!  I added the data and matched the addresses for the schools- referring to Google Maps and the National Center for Educational Statistics website to reference and confirm.

I enjoyed this lab quite a lot and let myself get into the work and explore the tools available to me. I can wholeheartedly say I am starting to understand the appreciation around GIS and all its tools! When I first started using the application it all felt intimidating and quite frankly, frustrating. I know I can search questions I have on google and EsriHelp. Additionally, I feel more comfortable asking for help when I can’t find an answer online.
